Actually ferromagnetic – responds to magnets and behaves like iron. Encapsulated in plastic, the iron maintains a stable matte, cast metal finish as printed – can be rusted if desired. Weighted feel has 1.5x the density of standard PLA. Rustable to create modern artifacts in a few easy steps. Attracts magnets (neodymium type recommended). Prints easily like PLA with less nozzle wear than steel or carbon fiber.
- Induction at magnetic saturation about 0.15 Tesla.
- Relative (to air) Permeability – between 5 and independent of frequency up to 1 MHz.
- Permeability – between 62E-7 and 100E-7 H/m independent of frequency up to 1 MHz.
- More thermally conductive than standard plastic.
This filament is more abrasive than standard PLA. Be prepared to replace your nozzle and do 1st layer adjustment. Try wear-resistant and/or larger diameter nozzle for increased service intervals.
Usable on most PLA-compatible printers. Processing is comparable to standard PLA. No heated bed required. Process may be less consistent on smaller nozzles and/or Bowden-type machines. Manufacturer frequently prints using direct-drive systems with 0.4 mm nozzles, though prefers 0.6 mm and 190-210C (standard PLA or a bit cooler) for the best experience.
In filament form, is slightly more brittle than standard PLA, and requires extra care when handling.
RUSTING PROCESS (from ProtoPlant Makers of Proto-pasta):
Rust. Patina. Artifact. Great words to describe beautiful weathered finishes you’d expect from old, metal objects, but how is that related to 3D printing? For a truly unique experience in 3D Printing, Proto-pasta Iron PLA can be rusted to create a modern artifact and here’s how:
What You’ll Need:
- Safety glasses and gloves
- A well-ventilated workspace
- A Proto-pasta Iron 3D Print
- Rusting solution
- Hydrogen Peroxide
- White vinegar
- Salt
- Spray bottle, brush, or towel
- Wire brush (optional)
- Plastic bag (optional)
- Some sun or a heating duct (optional)
Steps:
- Simply, mix peroxide and vinegar – then add salt until mixture is saturated.
- Spray or brush rusting solution on to your Print and watch it rust.
- For improved rust effect, try:
-
- brushing the surface of your Proto-pasta Iron 3D print to expose more metal,
- wrapping with a towel and/or sealing in a plastic bag to retain moisture, or
- warming the solution to accelerate the reaction.
